We, at EKO 4 National Translation Service, offer certified, sworn, and notarized translation? But what all those types of translations are, and is there any difference?
Let’s start off with the basics: Each country has its own requirements and definitions as to what those three types of translations are. Not only that, sometimes there might be an overlapping between the three. However, not each time, not everywhere. Confusing, right?
Let’s try and brake this down into smaller pieces of information:
Simply put, a certified translation is a translation made by a linguist, who at the end of the translation states that, the said translation is true and accurate. In some countries, such as the US and the UK, such translator’s accuracy statement is enough and the document is ready to go. We, at EKO 4 National Translation Service can help you find the best solution and type of translation for the document to be translated and the purpose you will use it for.
We, at EKO 4 National Translation Service, offer certified translation for:
Birth certificates
Marriage certificates
Death records
Bank account statements
Medical certificates, fit notes
Employment letters
Vaccination records
And many more…
Furthermore, you usually wouldn’t need anything more than a simple translation if you’re having certain types of documents to be translated, e.g.
- Translation of fiction / literature;
- Translation of marketing / advertisement materials;
- Translation of audio and video files;
- Mobile App Translation;
- Translation of scientific materials and technical documentation.
However, in other countries, like many of the EU Member States, a linguist stating that the translation they made is true and accurate, wouldn’t be sufficient enough for the said translation to be accepted by various governmental institutions and official bodies. In those cases, a translator should be sworn.

- Various documents for VISA application;
- Notary deeds and instruments;
- Business documents for registration purposes on the territory of a foreign country;
- Marital status certificates, marriage certificate, birth certificate;
- Police clearance and conviction status certificates;
- Court orders, judgements, agreements, contracts, etc.
What exactly is a sworn translator, varies from country to country; however, simply put – it is a linguist, who in some cases needs to have obtained a certain language proficiency degree, as evident from diplomas and/or certificates they are the holder of, as well as successfully passed exams in accordance with the applicable provisions and regulations of a particular country, plus they have to had made an oath before a local court, Ministry, or another authority responsible in recognizing such linguists as sworn translators.
Last, but not least, a notarized translation, is a translation where the linguist has again, certified that the translation they made is true and accurate, but also have their signature witnessed and attested by a Notary, a lawyer, a commissioner of oaths etc. depending on the country the translation is being notarized in and in accordance with the local legislation and requirements.
However, in other countries, like many of the EU Member States, a linguist stating that the translation they made is true and accurate, wouldn’t be sufficient enough for the said translation to be accepted by various governmental institutions and official bodies. In those cases, a translator should be sworn.
We, at EKO 4 National Translation Service, offer notarized translation service.
Get a free estimateYou would usually need a notarized translation in case you are dealing with:
- POAs, Statements, Affidavits, Declarations;
- Documents, certificates, letters, judgements, orders issued by the court;
- Decree absolute / final order, divorce papers;
- Parental custody agreements;
In some cases, however, a translation will be a combination of two, or all of the three types of translation. For example, if you are a foreigner coming to the US, and you need your documents translated, let’s say for business or marketing purposes, then you’d use a certified translation service. However, if you’re applying for a VISA at the USCIS, you will need those translations notarized. So, you have a combination of a certified plus notarized translation.
Anyways, if you’re going to a European country, and you’re applying for a VISA or residence permit there, you will most likely need your documents translated by a sworn translator, whereas the translator’s signature might need to be attested by a notary, i.e., you will have a combination of a sworn plus notarized translation.
Furthermore, in some countries, there is requirement that the translation is made not just by any sworn translator, it needs to be a local sworn translator. To make things easier to understand, let’s take a French translator, and imagine this scenario – you need to have a birth certificate translated, and you will submit that translation for Visa Application or Residence Permit in France. So, a sworn French translator from Belgium will not be accepted in France. Therefore, you will need to find a sworn translator in France in order for the translation to be accepted in that country, and for the translation to be notarized.
